Skyline Bar

 ... Janine Allen  ...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

OPRAH

(5.7.12)  Wanted to let you know that Oprah (now Maggie) and Winston are starting to really enjoy each other. They spent much of the afternoon chasing each other in the back yard. They took turns being the chaser too!

We think she's gained a little bit more weight but we haven't weighed her since the vet visit. She has cleared our back yard of any squirrel activity which is good news for our garden!  She even notices the squirrels through the window and cries to go out and chase them!  It's funny to watch her.

She's coming along with her training and is learning to heel when we do our walk. She's smart and "gets it" pretty quickly. She sits really well for Keith and is doing better for me. We are working on stay as well. We just love her to death and are so glad to have her in our family. She is just as sweet as ever!

(7.24.12)  I just wanted to say hi and let you know that Maggie is doing well and we just love having her as part of our family. She is doing well with her training and has developed quite a personality. She has mischief in her eyes quite often especially when she is stealing one of my shoes!

We learned that she is quite frightened of thunder so she wears a thunder shirt at the first rumble. In the picture you can see her curled up in her shirt. Notice how unconcerned Winston is about it all! They get along fabulously and still chase each other around the yard and wrestle with high energy.   Winston often initiates the play sessions and she is a very enthusiastic participant!

It has been so neat to watch her discover the toys and how to play. She also has learned to cuddle and will now climb up into our laps. She is a wonderful companion for Winston and for me. She seems to be my dog, as she chooses me for cuddling and sleeps by my side of the bed until I turn out the light. Then she goes back to her bed. She is the first one up in the morning and always comes and wakes me first.  We just love her so much and are so grateful she came to us!  -- Sincerely, Susan R.

OAKLEY
OAKLEY

(9.30.09) I was going to wait for Brian to upload the picture but he is busy so I thought I would update you so far. Right now, Oakley and Ceasar went to the hardware store with Brian to get some things. He already likes to go, and last night he got to ride in the 1959 Ranchero that Brian restored. We did have a looooog night because he and Ceasar wanted to play all night long. I finally came into the den so Brian could sleep. I had to separate them several times. They were both guilty as the other one at starting it. I don't know what time but I finally put Ceasar in the bedroom with Brian, and Oakley went to sleep in the living room. He has mastered the dog door as of this morning. He is so curious and has so many new things to explore here that he just can't settle down. He is so loveable, he loved Mac, our pet sitter, and our friends who came over this morning. I have a crate but I haven't put him in it yet. We have a kennel outside that is nice, it's big, they can be there in the daytime if I'm gone. When I know he doesn't chew and he can be safe he won't be in there either. We love him already. More later --- Vicky
