Animal Success Stories

Skyline Bar

 ... Janine Allen  ...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

RUDY

(11.19.10)  Dear HBR,

First of all, we want to thank you for the support in our search for our new family addition.  We met numerous Boxers in our search, and even attempted to adopt one from another organization.  However, we found HBR to be outstanding in support and care for the all the dogs we met.  Not to mention, the people of HBR were the best to work with; and to be around.

I raised hunting dogs for most of my young adult life, but had never heard of "rescue".  When Nikki mentioned searching for our dog through rescue, I was confused and a bit hesitant. After witnessing the difference HBR makes in many lives, I will never again search breeders. Although we took, for what must have seemed like forever, we finally adopted RUDY.  As I indicated earlier, I have raised and trained many dogs, but have never owned a Boxer.  So, I've had many I called the best.  I'm having to go back on that now ........ Rudy is, hands-down, the best ever.  He's truly like our child at this point, and we're so happy to have found him.

When we first met him, he was very stand-off-ish with men, but once we decided he was the one, it was like he knew he had to change his behavior. He immediately became comfortable, finding his way around our little puppy, Sam (Brussels-Griffon), and seems to now be the leader and big brother.  He plays with Sam and, although he's not into toys, he will run around the yard with Sam and wrestle with him.  Of course, like most folks, we started with the "no dogs on the furniture" rule but now that Rudy is family .... it doesn't bother either of us .......... it's his furniture as well !  Not to mention, he came to us with the learned habit of respecting the home .................... thanks to HBR ! We have had four female fosters in the past few months and he has never had any problems with them. He seems to be ok with sharing his home and his family.

We cannot imagine life without him ..... thanks again !

Here are some photos of Rudy's new life ................... as Nikki would say, "Lazy Bum!".  In one of the photos he and our recent foster were found lying in our bed. When they got caught, neither of them moved and simply seemed to pose for a picture. Rudy is allowed on our bed and that is where he can be found most of the time, which is why Nikki calls him a lazy bum.

Have a great week,
Jay & Nikki Grimes - Pearland, Texas
