Animal Success Stories

Skyline Bar

 ... Janine Allen  ...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

LEA

(9.26.12)  Love this little girl more than I ever imagined possible!  And trust me I have loved some dogs with my entire heart and soul. She brings such joy to me and Michael although she's getting into more and more mischief the more comfortable she becomes at the house.  She's such a little stinker.  She was meant to be with us and I feel Rocky is near by every time I look in that wrinkled up little face of hers.  Thank you for allowing me to adopt this little gem. --- Linda W.

PIPER

(7.13.12)  Just wanted to let you know that Piper is right at home. She is a loving dog who loves her new family. I tore my rotator cuff and had surgery yesterday and my little cuddle buddy has not left my side. -- Stephen T.

(8.31.12)  Piper is doing wonderful. She has adapted just fine with everyone in the family from adults to a 6 year old and an 8 month old.  Piper loves to play with her new brother (6 year old) and allows her new sister (8 month old) to climb all over her. She is very well behaved and loves to please everyone in the house. She loves going on her nightly walks and even gets to hang out in the front yard with us (since she won’t run off).  Here are a few pics of Piper enjoying her new family (she is a cuddler).

MAXIMUS

(7.27.12)  Max is a great dog. He's so funny. If you pet him and stop before he wants you to, he nudges his head under your hand to lift it up so you can continue to pet him.  When he tires of this he turns around and goes to his kennel (we've moved it downstairs).   The other day I was sitting on the couch talking and he was at my feet.  I guess I was too loud so he took a deep breath, let it out and got up and went to his kennel.  He does really well when I walk him and the other day my granddaughter and I took him for a walk.  I let her hold the leash and walk him and he was very gentle.  Today he has a play date with my niece's Alaskan Huskie.  We'll keep you posted.  We love him.  --  Regina and Chris B.

(8.1.12)  Dear HBR, I can’t begin to tell you what a joy it is having Max, whom we adopted from HBR.  Max is wonderful and is as happy with his new family as we are with him.  Max has adapted quite well to his new home. We rise around 5:00 a.m. on work days and Max is at my side at all times.  He enjoys his daily walks in the neighborhood seeing new sights and sniffing out what? Heck if I know, but it makes him happy.  When we first brought Max home he wouldn’t eat the food I had purchased for him (salmon and sweet potatoes) so I made homemade gravy and put a little over it.  Well I don’t have to tell you what happened next. Yes he was licking the bowl.  I can’t even get my husband to do that.  But hey at least somebody likes Momma’s home cooking! Lol.  I did finally find some dog food he likes.  He doesn’t really care for baths but never puts up a fight and lets me wash him and clean his face.  He’s so sweet.  He’s well behaved and we just love him.  My granddaughter simply adores him.

Thank you HBR for this wonderful gift you have given us.  For anyone looking to adopt please don’t hesitate to contact HBR, find out where they’ll be hosting their next event and check them out.  I’m glad we did.  The entire experience from start to finish was great, no hassle, all questions answered, all email responded to and trust me we sent a lot just because we had lots of questions but each question was answered in a timely manner and each person we encountered was exceptional.  We’ve gained new friends and a new family with HBR.  Am I making all this up?  Well I guess you’ll just have to see for yourself.   --  Sincerely,  Regina B.

OPRAH

(5.7.12)  Wanted to let you know that Oprah (now Maggie) and Winston are starting to really enjoy each other. They spent much of the afternoon chasing each other in the back yard. They took turns being the chaser too!

We think she's gained a little bit more weight but we haven't weighed her since the vet visit. She has cleared our back yard of any squirrel activity which is good news for our garden!  She even notices the squirrels through the window and cries to go out and chase them!  It's funny to watch her.

She's coming along with her training and is learning to heel when we do our walk. She's smart and "gets it" pretty quickly. She sits really well for Keith and is doing better for me. We are working on stay as well. We just love her to death and are so glad to have her in our family. She is just as sweet as ever!

(7.24.12)  I just wanted to say hi and let you know that Maggie is doing well and we just love having her as part of our family. She is doing well with her training and has developed quite a personality. She has mischief in her eyes quite often especially when she is stealing one of my shoes!

We learned that she is quite frightened of thunder so she wears a thunder shirt at the first rumble. In the picture you can see her curled up in her shirt. Notice how unconcerned Winston is about it all! They get along fabulously and still chase each other around the yard and wrestle with high energy.   Winston often initiates the play sessions and she is a very enthusiastic participant!

It has been so neat to watch her discover the toys and how to play. She also has learned to cuddle and will now climb up into our laps. She is a wonderful companion for Winston and for me. She seems to be my dog, as she chooses me for cuddling and sleeps by my side of the bed until I turn out the light. Then she goes back to her bed. She is the first one up in the morning and always comes and wakes me first.  We just love her so much and are so grateful she came to us!  -- Sincerely, Susan R.

ZEUS
ZEUS

(7.17.12)  Zeus is now 72 lbs and a beautiful boy. He had more training and is very well behaved. When we go to the Vet for play day he always sits before I open the door and one day everyone clapped......he is loving and we all are so happy to have him.  - Barbara
